High-Scoring Crossplay Words: J, Q, X and Z
Short words that carry a 10-point tile onto a bonus square are the fastest way to a 40-point turn without a bingo.
Where the big scores come from
Crossplay hands out points in two ways: the +40 bonus for using all seven tiles, and heavy tiles on bonus squares. The first needs a lucky rack; the second only needs you to know a few short words. J, Q and Z are worth 10 each, X is 8, and the corners of the board are triple-letter squares — so a two-letter word like XI placed with the X on a corner is already 25 points before cross-words.
All values below are base values from Crossplay's tile chart, before bonus squares.

J words (2 to 4 letters)
J is 10 points in Crossplay (8 in Scrabble). There is only one in the bag, so when you draw it, place it on a letter-bonus square — on a corner triple-letter it is 30 points by itself.
JA (11) JO (11) HAJ (14) JAB (15) JAG (15) JAM (14) JAR (12) JAW (16) JAY (15) JEE (12) JET (12) JEU (13) JIB (15) JIG (15) JIN (12) JOB (15) JOE (12) JOG (15) JOT (12) JOW (16) JOY (15) JUG (16) JUN (13) JUS (13) JUT (13) RAJ (12) TAJ (12) AJAR (13) AJEE (13) DJIN (14) DOJO (14) FUJI (17) HADJ (16) HAJI (15) HAJJ (24) JABS (16) JACK (20) JADE (14) JAGG (19) JAGS (16) JAIL (14) JAKE (18) JAMB (18) JAMS (15) JANE (13) JAPE (15) JARL (14) JARS (13) JATO (13) JAUK (19) JAUP (16) JAVA (18) JAWS (17) JAYS (16) JAZZ (31) JEAN (13) JEED (14) JEEP (15) JEER (13) JEES (13) JEEZ (22) JEFE (16) JEHU (16) JELL (15) JEON (13) JERK (18) JESS (13) JEST (13) JETE (13) JETS (13) JEUX (21) JIAO (13) JIBB (19) JIBE (16) JIBS (16) JIFF (19) JIGS (16) JILL (15) JILT (14) JIMP (17) JINK (18) JINN (13) JINS (13) JINX (20) JIVE (18) JOBS (16) JOCK (20) JOES (13) JOEY (16) JOGS (16) JOHN (15) JOIN (13) JOKE (18) JOKY (21) JOLE (14) JOLT (14) JOSH (15) JOSS (13) JOTA (13) JOTS (13) JOUK (19) JOWL (18) JOWS (17) JOYS (16) JUBA (17) JUBE (17) JUDO (15) JUGA (17) JUGS (17) JUJU (24) JUKE (19) JUMP (18) JUNK (19) JUPE (16) JURA (14) JURY (17) JUST (14) JUTE (14) JUTS (14) MOJO (15) PUJA (16) RAJA (13) SOJA (13)
X words (2 to 4 letters)
X is 8 points and the friendliest heavy tile: it forms a two-letter word with every vowel (AX, EX, XI, OX, XU). That makes it the easiest tile to drop across two bonus squares at once.
AX (9) EX (9) OX (9) XI (9) XU (10) AXE (10) BOX (13) COX (12) DEX (11) FAX (13) FIX (13) FOX (13) GOX (13) HEX (12) KEX (15) LAX (11) LEX (11) LOX (11) LUX (12) MAX (12) MIX (12) NIX (10) OXO (10) OXY (13) PAX (12) PIX (12) POX (12) PYX (15) RAX (10) REX (10) SAX (10) SEX (10) SIX (10) SOX (10) TAX (10) TUX (11) VEX (15) VOX (15) WAX (14) XIS (10) ZAX (19) APEX (13) AXAL (12) AXED (12) AXEL (12) AXES (11) AXIL (12) AXIS (11) AXLE (12) AXON (11) BOXY (17) CALX (14) COAX (13) COXA (13) CRUX (14) DEXY (15) DOUX (13) DOXY (15) EAUX (12) EXAM (13) EXEC (13) EXES (11) EXIT (11) EXON (11) EXPO (13) FALX (15) FAUX (15) FIXT (14) FLAX (15) FLEX (15) FLUX (16) FOXY (17) HOAX (13) IBEX (14) ILEX (12) IXIA (11) JEUX (21) JINX (20) LUXE (13) LYNX (15) MAXI (13) MINX (13) MIXT (13) MOXA (13) NEXT (11) NIXE (11) NIXY (14) ONYX (14) ORYX (14) OXEN (11) OXES (11) OXID (12) OXIM (13) PIXY (16) PREX (13) ROUX (12) SEXT (11) SEXY (14) TAXA (11) TAXI (11) TEXT (11) VEXT (16) WAXY (18) XYST (14)
Z words (2 to 4 letters)
Z is 10 points. ZA, ADZ, ZAP, ZIT and ZAX are the plays to know; a Z on a triple-letter square that also counts in a cross-word scores 60 from that one tile.
ZA (11) ADZ (13) AZO (12) BIZ (15) COZ (14) FEZ (15) FIZ (15) WIZ (16) ZAG (15) ZAP (14) ZAS (12) ZAX (19) ZED (13) ZEE (12) ZEK (17) ZIG (15) ZIN (12) ZIP (14) ZIT (12) ZOA (12) ZOO (12) ADZE (14) AZAN (13) AZON (13) BIZE (16) BOZO (16) BUZZ (26) CHEZ (17) COZY (18) CZAR (15) DAZE (14) DITZ (14) DOZE (14) DOZY (17) FAZE (16) FIZZ (25) FOZY (19) FRIZ (16) FUTZ (17) FUZE (17) FUZZ (26) GAZE (16) GEEZ (16) HAZE (15) HAZY (18) IZAR (13) JAZZ (31) JEEZ (22) LAZE (14) LAZY (17) LUTZ (15) MAZE (15) MAZY (18) MEZE (15) MOZO (15) OOZE (13) OOZY (16) ORZO (13) OUZO (14) OYEZ (16) PHIZ (17) PREZ (15) PUTZ (16) QUIZ (23) RAZE (13) RAZZ (22) RITZ (13) SIZE (13) SIZY (16) TZAR (13) WHIZ (19) ZAGS (16) ZANY (16) ZAPS (15) ZARF (16) ZEAL (14) ZEBU (17) ZEDS (14) ZEES (13) ZEIN (13) ZEKS (18) ZERK (18) ZERO (13) ZEST (13) ZETA (13) ZIGS (16) ZILL (15) ZINC (15) ZING (16) ZINS (13) ZIPS (15) ZITI (13) ZITS (13) ZOEA (13) ZOIC (15) ZONE (13) ZONK (18) ZOOM (15) ZOON (13) ZOOS (13) ZORI (13) ZYME (18)
Q words (2 to 4 letters)
Q is 10 points and the hardest to place. See the dedicated Q-without-U list; the short words below are the emergency outlets.
QI (11) QAT (12) QIS (12) QUA (13) SUQ (13) AQUA (14) QAID (14) QATS (13) QOPH (17) QUAD (15) QUAG (17) QUAI (14) QUAY (17) QUEY (17) QUID (15) QUIN (14) QUIP (16) QUIT (14) QUIZ (23) QUOD (15) SUQS (14)
The bonus-square math
- Heavy tile on a triple-letter (TL): J/Q/Z = 30, X = 24, K/V = 18, W = 15. If that tile is part of two words (across and down), it scores in both — a Z on a TL in two words is 60.
- Heavy tile on a double-word (DW): the whole word doubles. ZAX (19) becomes 38.
- Triple-word (TW) squares sit on the edges, three in from each corner; a heavy tile in a short word on a TW is the best non-bingo turn in the game (JO on a TW with a cross-word can top 40).
The board solver does this arithmetic for every legal placement, so if you want to see whether a 60-point Z play exists on your board, import a screenshot and check.
