Crossplay Strategy: 9 Tips That Actually Move Your Score

The scoring levers that matter, in order - from the +40 bonus to board geometry that differs from Scrabble in ways most players never notice.

1. Chase the +40, but on your schedule

Using all 7 tiles earns a flat +40 — routinely half your turn's score. Keep racks flexible (balanced vowels/consonants, an S or a blank held back) and dump awkward tiles early so a full-rack play stays reachable.

2. Blanks are bingo fuel, not band-aids

A blank scores 0 wherever it lands, so spending it on a 12-point patch play is a waste. Its real value is completing a 7-tile play for the +40. Hold it longer than feels comfortable.

3. Learn the board's geometry — it isn't Scrabble's

Corners are triple-letter, not triple-word. The eight TW squares sit on the edges three squares from each corner, and the center is a double-word. High letters (X=8, J/Q/Z=10, K/V=6) on corner TLs are huge; whole-word real estate lives on the edge TWs.

4. Two-letter words are your placement unlock

Parallel plays — laying a word snug against an existing one — score every cross-word at once and are how good players turn 12-point turns into 35-point turns. They only work if you know the two-letter word list.

5. Recalibrate tile values

W=5, K=6, V=6, G=4 are all worth more than their Scrabble instincts suggest; H is worth less. See the full chart. A "bad" Scrabble rack is often fine here and vice versa.

6. Don't feed the triples

Every tile you place opens squares for your opponent. Before playing next to a TW lane or leaving a vowel adjacent to a TL, ask what the reply looks like — especially in real-time matches where opponents pounce fast.

7. Manage the endgame bag

With 100 tiles and open counts, late game is about tempo: if the bag is nearly empty, going out first banks the remaining value of your opponent's rack. Play off big tiles before the bag empties.

8. Review your games

The fastest way to improve is seeing what you missed. After a match, screenshot your board and run the solver — it ranks every legal play with exact scores, so you can compare your move against the best available.
